ANALYSIS OF RADIATION LEAKAGE FROM MICROWAVE OVEN DURING THE THAWING OF TILAPIA FISH TISSUE

Abstract
This research highlights the effects of electromagnetic radiation from microwave ovens on the health of students who are exposed to radiation when performing laboratory experiments in the public health laboratory at the City campus of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS). It has been concluded that there is a correlation between radiation leakage from microwave ovens with distance. A microwave oven in the laboratory was used to thaw fish tissue and a microwave leakage detector was used to measure the radiation leakage. Measurements were obtained for the top, sides, and front of the microwave oven. The average of the measured values was recorded for each sample. The highest value of radiation leakage obtained was 2.97mW/cm2 which is less compared to the standard exposure radiation limit which is 4 W/m2 recorded by International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). In this research work, it has been concluded that there are no dangerous health effects of microwave radiation from microwave ovens used in the public health laboratory at the City campus of UDUS.
