PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF Garcinia kola(Heckel) SEED EXTRACTS ON Salmonella typhi and Klebsiella pneumoniae

Stephen Meyiwa Chomini.

Abstract
The phytochemical screening and antibacterial activity of Garcinia kola (Heckel) on Salmonella typhi and Klebsiella pneumoniae was carried out. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins, saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenols in the seed extract. The susceptibility tests revealed zones of inhibition of 12.0mm for both S.typhi and K.pneumoniae with methanolic extract, while the aqueous extract was found to be less effective when compared with methanolic extract at 4.0mm and 3.3mm for S. typhi and K. pneumoniae respectively. The Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 50mg/ml and 12.5mg/ml on S.typhi and K.pneumoniae respectively. The Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of methanolic extract on S. typhi andK.pneumoniaeare 100mg/ml and 25mg/ml respectively. The hot aqueous extract did not show bactericidal effects at the test concentrations against the test organisms. There was significant difference (p<0.05) in effectiveness of different extract concentrations on test organisms. The need for further trials on higher extract concentrations to ascertain the Minimuaum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the extract, as well as raising plantation of Garcinia kola became imperative in order to ensure sustainably sustainable.

Key words: Phytochemical, Antibacterial, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Therapeutic and Methanol.
